Post by is »

murnia: pronounced MOOR-nee-ah. A noun describing the typically Asturian form of melancholy, longing or nostalgia. Also used in some counties to describe a heavy hangover. Amurnia is the word variant in westernmost Asturias.

Synonyms at woe, bleakness, dejection, despondency, dispiritedness, dolefulness, downcastness, grief, heartbreak, heavy heart, sorrow, blues, funk.

Usage examples:

Ye mui murniu esi rapaz. [That guy has a very melancholic temperament.]
La probe Catuxa tien murnia d’Asturies. [Poor Catuxa is homesick for Asturias.]
Guei ye un dia murniu p’Asturies. [Today is a sad day for Asturias.]
Nolo bebeu muitu anueite ya guei tien murnia. [Nolo drank a lot last night and today has a hangover.]

Here’s a YouTube clip of an Asturian metal band called Taranus and their song titled ‘Fame, murnia y mieu’ [Hunger, sadness and fear]:

The title of a 2004 book by Jose Luis Rendueles is titled ‘La hestoria mas murnia enxamas contada’ [The saddest story ever told]

Incidentally, Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes has been translated into Asturian as ‘El caballeru de la murnia figura’ [‘The Knight of the Sad Countenance’] because of the cruel practical jokes that eventually led Don Quixote to a great melancholy and a broken heart.
