Barbara and Xose, Thanks for the added information on Moundsville. I'll have to ask my father about the names you mention. While the marjority of my family lived in Harrison, County West Virginia, they did have connections in Moundsville. Do either of you know how Moundsville compared in size to the...

La Tienda Tiene Cidra - El Gaitero

Bienvenido Xose, I thought that I'd seen some Asturian sidra availble and I checked at La Tienda, Williamsburg, Virginia (Asturian foods, books, paella supplies, fans, botas, ceramics, glass, tiles, perfumes, gifts, etc.) They indeed have cider there. You can check them out by using the following li...

Thanks Carlos for your explanation of "madreñes." I'll be sure not to confuse them with "zuecos" from now on too. I think that "zuecos" might be like our "clogs" that are open in the back, with one heel, and sort of in an "s" shape if you think about...

Sweeny,

I tried to access your link, but one first has to have a Yahoo i.d., and then also be a member of the group AsturiasGen. Could you ask for permission to copy their list so that we could make it available to visitors to the Asturianus.org forums?

Susan, How nice to see your post about Cherryvale and the Vasquez Garcia family. As far as I know, Aurora Vasquez Garcia (my great grandmother) did not have any siblings in Kansas. She had only one brother, who eventually ended up in Cuba, and several sisters. As for Diego, I don't know much about h...

Art, I'll be there too, with my laptop and scanner. I hope that those in attendance who would like to have pictures scanned for themselves, and/or for the website will bring them along. This will save time and worry with shipping pictures to us for scanning. I also know that there will be at least 5...

Another Soccer Hall of Famer - Prudencio "Pete" Ga

Prompted by a conversation with La Nueva Espa~a's Elisa, I located another Asturiano, Prudencio "Pete" Garcia who was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Born in Salinas, Garcia emigrated to the U.S. in 1907, and was active in the St. Louis community. The biography linked above...

Xosenrique, What great news! I know that several Asturianos who were in West Virginia returned to Spain, and that some came for only a short time to work and then returned. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to do the research required to find them. Can you tells more about how you learned about ...

Seeking Your Help on Genealogical Terms

One of the many shortcomings of electronic translators is the fact that often they translate literally without understanding terms in context. This is especially true when trying to translate genealogical terms from English into Spanish. First cousin, second cousin, great Aunt, great great grandpare...

Cuaderno del Norte?

My cousin used to have a publication called CUADERNO DEL NORTE that featured contemporary Asturian artists, poets, and authors. I've tried to find it on the web, and I don't seem to have any luck. I'm wondering if others have heard of this journal and if it is still in publication.

Thanks!

Hey Sweeney, I think you're coming up against one of the most common problems with electronic translators. Although my experience has been with the online translators, I haven't heard of others that will do much better. Something like the Altavista translator should at least give you a place to begi...

Hola Mouguias, The parallels you see between characterizations of Asturias and West Virginia are important ones, and are also quite interesting to me. The two regions do really have lots of industrial and environmental history in common. Further, as "mountain people" there are stereotypes ...
