Mendez - Arrojo family - You've found us

Hello Cousin - I think! It always strikes me as odd when we find new family connections. I've just send an email to Toya, who is Adelina's granddaughter to see if she'd seen your post. I'm the great grand daughter of Aurora, who is the sister of your great-grandmother. Let's keep this conversation g...

Correction to the Arrojo Family picture : Names

I´m here with my cousins Maria Victoria and Almudena, and we have been working on correcting these names. From left to right: Pepe (Jose Arrojo) El Picoto, sister of Jose, "Tia Pepa" (Josefa Arrojo Martinez), Adela Arrojo Martinez, (seated) Isidoro Loche, standing with her hand on Isidoro´...

Hi Manny: I've been thinking about your idea of locating the earliest Asturians in West Virginia. It would be worth looking over the summary data for each census period by state to see when WV has its first listing of Spaniards. Even though I wouldn't necessarily trust the census record to be "...

Update on Documents

Hi Bob (GREAT!!! to see you here): Can you give me a rundown of the appointment with the NYC Consulate? Also, what documents did you have (and what originals did you really need?) Thanks! Un abrazo, primo!

Citizenship - At beginning Stages

Hi Folks: My father and I are well on our way. Last document, naturalization papers, are on their way this week. Any advice for getting appointments, or getting a response after the appointment? I also wonder if you've heard anything.

Thanks Miguel Angel ... it's good to know that a "People's History" will be put together by scholars in Spain. This isn't the history that most Americans learn about themselves, and for sure it isn't really the history we learn about other countries. It's good to have a "people's"...

Pinnickinnick - Mispronounced?

I have to post a disclaimer here: The belief among local Asturianus in Harrison Co. West Virginia (and others) that the naming of "Pinnickinnick" Hill came from the difficulty in pronouncing the work "picnic" is local lore. In fact, the name is much older and comes from the Nativ...

Glad you replied to this one Dad (Ronnie) since I wouldn't have been able to make the connections to these folks that I know. Everyone has a nickname, and I can never connect them to their "real" names. Glad you were able to help Cathy!

Oral Histories

I've been following the conversation about the planned simposio for 2008. I think the idea fits very well with ideas that Kenya and Mark from the archives at U. of Southern Florida had. Wouldn't it be great to get a team of folks gathering histories? I think this is very do-able since we have a vari...

The confusion seems to be between numbers in West Virginia and numbers in Harrison County. My father has them listed correctly above. If you look at it, you can see that the overwhemling majority of Spaniards in the state were located in Harrison County. My assumption is that the overwhelming majori...

Welcome Roberto, You've done lots of work on putting together your family's history. Thanks for sharing it with all of us. I'm glad to see that we have an active member from Canton, OH too, since I need to learn more about that community. The little girl at the top of the banner, Mary Jean Gonzalez ...

Perspectives

It's interesting to see the different ways newspapers spin the same story. I often use text from U.S. newspapers and pair them with non-U.S. sources about the same issue. It never fails that there's a nice complexity that arises to fuel the discussion. Here again it seems to be a matter of perspecti...

Teachers and Asturianus.org

I've been wondering if there are any teachers who use Asturianus.org to help their students, or to get students interested in things Asturian, immigration, language, etc. Do you know if anyone has used the site for instructional purposes?
